Installation instruction of Retro-Reflective Tape MF20 & MF21

General information

Mareflex MF20 and MF21 SOLAS Retro-Reflective Tapes are designed for the marine industry and can be used on any kind of marine safe equipment e.g.: life jackets, life buoys, life rafts etc.

Application surfaces

Mareflex MF20 tape having a self-adhesive layer, is best to be used on the following surface e.g.:

  • all kinds of flat, smooth surface,
  • rubber,
  • polyurethane,
  • polyester laminate (glass reinforced polyester),
  • PVC or vinyl,
  • aluminum.

Considering the many types of the surfaces where the MF20 tapes can be applied, the end user should perform his own tests to ensure that the product is suitable for his application and that it meets his demands.

Mareflex MF21 – having polyester backing – is best to be used on textiles and other highly flexible materials where self-adhesive materials do not ensure sufficient adhesion.

Adhesive application of MF20

  1. Prepare the surface by cleaning and removing of all dirt (we advise extraction naphtha or similar solvent), then accurately remove all cleaning agents and dry the surface.
  2. In case of exfoliating surfaces (e.g. some kinds of rubber) it is necessary to use an undercoat made of glue designed for this kind of material.
  3. Remove the release liner from the MF20 tape without using water or other liquid. The release liner should be removed partially and applied accordingly.
  4. After the application it is necessary to remove all creases and bubbles and firmly press the tape to the surface. It is important for the tape to stick to the material along the entire surface.
  5. Use soft cloth during application to avoid damage of the reflective layer.

Sewing instruction for MF21

  1. The tape is based on a strong textile which simplifies sewing.
  2. It is recommended to sew at a minimum of 3mm (~0,11'') from the edge, approximately 5 stitches per 15cm (~5,9'').
  3. It is recommended to use high quality threads e.g. Nylon #69.

NOTE: In case of using any type of lubricants or other chemicals during sewing, it is advised to test the lubricant on a sample of the MF21 tape before application.
